More about the investment options

BT Invest has different types of investment options – shares, managed funds, managed portfolios and term deposits – each with their own characteristics.

Key questions about our options

What are shares?

Listed securities, typically referred to as shares, are part-investments in an individual business traded on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX). Listed securities also include financial products which track the performance of an index, such as Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs).

BT Invest gives you access to ASX listed securities (including ETFs). You can view all your holdings, generate tax reporting and manage corporate actions all in the one account.

What are managed funds?

Managed funds are professionally managed investment portfolios with specific investment aims (e.g. to follow or do better than the market) and investment mixes (e.g. shares, bonds, etc).

BT Invest gives you access to a range of managed funds including:

  • Diversified funds (e.g. growth, balanced)
  • Sector funds (e.g. Australian and international shares)
  • Specialist funds (e.g. alternative)

What are managed portfolios?

Managed portfolio options are a portfolio of assets made up from managed funds, shares (which may include exchange traded funds) or cash. They are monitored by an appointed investment adviser to ensure the right investments in the right proportions are in place.

Each managed portfolio option has target percentage allocations in each asset, which the investment adviser sets (within minimum and maximum ranges).

Investments in BT Managed Portfolios are aligned as closely as possible to reflect the targets of your selected managed portfolio option by buying and selling the assets – this process is called "rebalancing".

What are term deposits?

A term deposit is a cash investment held at a financial institution (e.g. a bank) for an agreed interest rate over a fixed term, so the interest rate does not generally change for the nominated term.

BT Invest has a range of term deposits offering a variety of terms and interest payment frequencies to meet your needs.

^Management costs vary, depending on which managed fund you choose. They are the indirect costs of investing in a fund and:

  • are not deducted directly from your account, rather included in the unit price of the respective fund (but are still an additional cost to you)
  • can include performance fees, accounting, auditing and other operational and compliance costs
  • are not commissions or conflicted payments, and
  • are commonly measured and reported as a percentage figure called the Indirect Cost Ratio (ICR).

In addition, a buy/sell spread is charged by the product issuer on a buy or sell of units in those funds.

It is applied before the unit price is provided to us (but is still an additional cost to you). The amount of the buy/sell spread varies but a typical buy/sell spread is estimated to be between 0% and 1% but may fall outside this range.

Where you can find further information

If you want to know a particular fund’s fee and costs, they are quoted in the respective Product Disclosure Statement (PDS), which is freely available online after opening a BT Invest account (you can open a BT Invest account without needing to make a deposit).
